I have a (probably unhealthy) obsession with Kurt Vonnegut: his words, his drawings, and his wisdom. From time to time you’ll see more personal things on here, because it is my blog, but it’s probably 95% Vonnegut.

I can’t tell you how much I loved reading then—they were all so beautiful and inspiring. There were so many, in fact, that I’m putting them under a “Read More” so that you don’t all have an insanely long post on your dashboards.

Once again, thanks for sharing your love of Kurt!

and-so-itgoes: “I think the compilation idea is pretty neat, so I’ll throw in why I love Vonnegut. Basically, I had an almost instant connection with him through his writing. It was the first time I really heard my own thoughts and feelings reflected by another person. I always thought I was a bit alone in that respect, so I was very excited to see that there was at least one other person that thinks like me. As I read more books, more and more of what he had to say resonated with me. Therefore, one of my favorite quotes has to be from Timequake, “Still and all, why bother? Here’s my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.” Reading that (and really any other Vonnegut quote/book) was like receiving a very important letter from a very important person whom I had never met and whose letter I never expected.”

bone-fish: “Kurt is the only author that ever captured my attention. His books weren’t even like books, they were surreal and addicting. If they were mandatory reads in school, a lot more people would enjoy reading.”

(anonymous): “I love vonnegut because he cemented my love of books, stories and making me laugh at the weirdest things. thank you for this tumblr.” ((you’re welcome!))

whistlesays: “I can barely put it into words. Everything he writes is so tragic, yet human. Funny, sad, enlightening. It’s usually science fiction, yet more real than anything our generation can imagine going through. He’s one of the few writers that will stay relevant decades from now. I won’t even talk about the honesty of Kilgore Trout. The other day, my friend was poking fun at me for how obsessed I am with Vonnegut and he said, “He’s not God!” That’s probably funnier than saying he’s in heaven.”

bokononistchild: “Kurt Vonnegut taught me that we may never achieve the greatness and prosperity we as humans can achieve, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still love each other while we’re here.”

chelseagrinned: ““The insane, on occasion, are not without their charms.” He was right. May he rest in peace ♥”

waitingonmyrocket: “I love the way his words just draw you into a story and make it impossible to get out (not that you’d want to!)”

happilymad: “he’s kept me alive”

thegrandidiot: “because he let me know that it was okay to exist.”

silverchloride: “Someone on tumblr once said that reading Vonnegut feel like wearing a warm blanket while someone tells you bad news. That seems right.”

treestarsgreengrubbars: “After a terrible event in my life I read the words “Everything was beautiful and and nothing hurt” and I realized it was true.”

Any more recollections of why you love Kurt and what he means to you?

Any more recollections of why you love Kurt and what he means to you?

le-mythe-de-sisyphe:

Or “appeared to die”, as the Tralfamadorians would say. I think today is a wonderful day to remember what they taught Billy Pilgrim, which is that a person who is dead is still very much alive in the past. Kurt Vonnegut had 84 years’ worth of moments in his life, during which he gave us the lasting gift of his creativity. We have his writing, his speeches, and his art; we have his dry sense of humour, his unforgettable wisdom, and his fervent wish that we all become aware of what we need to do with our lives.

More than that, we each have our own special connection with Kurt. Whatever it is that drew you to him, that made you fall in love with him… Today is a day to be grateful for that. Flip through your favourite book and remind yourself of why Kurt is so special to you.

If you’d like, drop me a line here or in my ask box and tell me what you love about Kurt and why he means so much to you. I’ll compile them at the end of the day and post them (let me know if you’d rather it be kept private).

…So, this is embarrassingly late. But it’s still technically Friday, so it counts! I didn’t forget completely; I just had a crazy busy day. At any rate, let’s get down to brass tacks.

Suspenders.Holy shit, Kurt in suspenders. I didn’t know how much I needed that in my life until I saw this photo. He just looks good, and yet so casual. Not to mention, this is the same way he holds his cigarette in that photo of him that reminds me of my dad (the one in front of the house).
