I’ve always really liked this quote by Kurt Vonnegut in Player Piano: “I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.” And I like it more for the surrounding context, I think.

The character saying this is named Finnerty, and he’s based heavily on Vonnegut, which is really interesting to me. He’s this brilliant scientist who people are slightly afraid of because they think he’s crazy. Finnerty is having a conversation with his friend, Paul, and Paul suggests that he go see a psychiatrist, and then Finnerty talks about how a psychiatrist would pull him back into the center, and he wants to be on the edge because people on the edge always see the big things first.

I just think Kurt Vonnegut is super cool.
